Chapter 11

As we pulled into our driveway, the tension in the car was like a thick, suffocating fog. Angelica killed the engine with more force than necessary, the sudden silence amplifying our collective frustration. We all sat there for a moment, our failed visit to Moonlight Haven still a fresh wound.

I caught sight of Aunt Hecate in the rearview mirror, her image a counterpoint to our grim mood. She was humming softly to herself, a vague smile playing on her lips, seemingly oblivious to the chaos she’d unleashed earlier. Part of me envied her carefree state, that blissful unawareness, but mostly I felt a deep, bone-weary exhaustion that seemed to seep into every fiber of my being.

“Well,” I said, my voice sounding strained even to my own ears as I broke the oppressive silence, “we should probably get inside. No use sitting out here all night.”

Lovage nodded, her movements slow and deliberate as she gently coaxed Aunt Hecate out of the car. Angelica, on the other hand, stormed ahead, her frustration evident in every step. She slammed the front door open with enough force to rattle the windows and disappeared inside. I sighed heavily.

Once we were all gathered in the living room, the reality of our situation hit me anew, like a punch to the gut. We were right back where we started, with no solution in sight and our problems multiplied. Aunt Hecate settled into her favorite armchair, still humming contentedly, she seemed completely unaware of the turmoil surrounding her.

“So,” Angelica said, her voice tight with barely suppressed anger, her eyes flashing dangerously, “what’s the brilliant plan now, Sage? Because clearly, this isn’t working. At all.”

I ran a hand through my hair, feeling the strands catch on my fingers as if even they were resisting any attempt at order. “I don’t know, Angie. I really don’t,” I admitted, the words tasting bitter in my mouth. As the eldest, I was supposed to have all the answers, but right now, I felt completely lost.

Lovage perched on the arm of the sofa, her face scrunched with concern, her eyes darting between Angelica and me as if trying to gauge the likelihood of an explosion. “Maybe we could try another facility? Or hire a full-time caregiver?” she suggested tentatively, ever the peacemaker.

I shook my head, feeling the beginnings of a headache forming behind my eyes. “After today’s display, I doubt any magical nursing home would take her. And a regular caregiver wouldn’t be equipped to handle her... outbursts. We’d be putting an innocent person at risk.”

“We can’t keep living like this,” Angelica insisted, pacing the room like a caged animal, her purple hair flying around her pale, angry face. “It’s not fair to us, and it’s not safe for anyone. Something has to give, Sage.”

I knew she was right, but the thought of giving up on Aunt Hecate made my chest tighten painfully. The logical part of my brain warred with my emotions, leaving me feeling torn and conflicted. “I know, Angie. But she’s family.
